A new study published Monday in the British Medical Journal suggests that the prescription drug Lamisil could increase the risk of developing cancer by up to 30% in those taking it, and that the risk for breast cancer, a type of breast cancer that develops when a woman’s immune system doesn’t work, is higher in those who take it.
The drug, which costs about $7.8 million a year for a six-month supply, is used to treat conditions like chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and benign prostatic hyperplasia.
In addition, Lamisil was found to increase the risk of Alzheimer’s disease, a type of dementia that occurs when a person has too much of the brain’s amyloid plaques, the proteins found in proteins that are made by the body. Those proteins can increase the risk of Alzheimer’s by about 30%.
Researchers believe the drug could help prevent the development of Alzheimer’s in the first place.
“The results of this study are a good sign that the use of Lamisil in the treatment of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and benign prostatic hyperplasia is likely to be safe and effective for both the individual and their caregivers,” said lead author Dr. James Barder, a pulmonary doctor in Massachusetts, who led the study.
Barder, who also is a professor of pediatrics at Boston University School of Medicine, was not immediately available for comment.
The study was published in the British Medical Journal in July. It was funded by the British Medical Research Foundation, an independent British health care body.
Barder is currently writing an article in the journal about Lamisil, which was the second prescription drug approved by the U. S. Food and Drug Administration for the treatment of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. In December, the drug was given approval for the treatment of people with Alzheimer’s dementia.
In the study, participants taking Lamisil for six months took a tablet of the drug for six days and a pill of a placebo for two weeks, twice a week.
Doctors often prescribe these drugs for a variety of conditions, including Alzheimer’s and pulmonary arterial hypertension.
But the study did not find any difference in cancer risk among those taking Lamisil for six months or a placebo.
The researchers also did not see an increase in breast cancer risk in those taking the drug after the three-month mark in those who took the drug and the six-month mark in those who took the placebo.
In the new study, patients taking Lamisil and a placebo for six months were followed for three years.
The researchers also found no significant differences in risk of breast cancer between those who took the drug and those who took the placebo.
But a key finding: the drug didn’t increase the risk of developing cancer in those who took it for six months or a placebo.
“This is a landmark study that may provide a basis for the development of new prevention strategies,” said Dr. Thomas Dolan, a University of Texas Southwestern Medical School faculty member and the lead author of the study.
The drug, sold under the brand name Lamisil, was approved in the United States in 2003.
“We are very excited about this potential drug that could help prevent the development of breast cancer,” Dr. Dolan added.
But he said there was some evidence that taking the drug for six months or longer may have an increased risk of cancer in those who take it for the first time, and that some women may not be comfortable taking it.
“It has been shown that long-term use of the drug,” Dr. Barder said. “It has been shown that long-term use of Lamisil for more than six months, or more than five years, or longer than six years, or more than five years may have an increased risk of cancer.”
In addition to the drug, the study found that Lamisil was also linked to an increased risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease, which occurs when the brain isn’t working properly.
Dr. Barder added that it could also increase the risk of breast cancer. The drugs were approved for use in the United States, Europe, Japan and Canada, he said.
He said that some women who take the drug for a few months may have a better chance of getting an enlarged prostate or high-grade prostate cancer.
